Chase Community Giving Contest – A Nonprofit Social Media Success Story

July 20, 2010

If you’ve been following Jacob’s Cure on Facebook or Twitter, you may know that we did not win the Chase Community Giving Contest last week. You may be wondering why the title of this post includes the word “success,” but I believe there is more than one way to measure success in a contest like this.

A non-profit is only as strong as its supporters—after all, without our supporters, we wouldn’t be here at all. The Chase Community Giving Contest was a beautiful opportunity to see all of our stakeholders—families, friends, donors and more—banding together to support us. Although we did not win a grant from Chase, we gained 800 new friends on Facebook and 100 on Twitter. With a disease as rare as Canavan Disease, we are beyond thrilled to have almost 1,000 more people in the world who know about this devastating disorder.  We received many inspirational messages from our friends, old and new, and we were deeply touched by the outpouring of frustration, sympathy, commiseration and, most importantly, hope, on our behalf when we came in 201st place, only eight votes shy of a $20,000 grant.

So, thank you all for sharing this journey with us! We are grateful for each and every one of you in our community, and we’re looking forward to seeing how much we all can achieve together as we move forward in the fight against Canavan disease.
